A well-priced country inn with lots of character. Follow the river up to Fotheringhay or stay put for a lazy lunch on the terrace. A dreamy inn built of mellow stone that stands on the green in this gorgeous village. Paths lead out into open country, so follow the river up to Fotheringhay, where Mary Queen of Scots lost her head. Back at the pub, warm interiors mix style and tradition to great effect. You can eat wherever you want – in the bar, where a fire roars, in the airy snug with views of the green, or in the orangery, which opens onto a terrace. Wherever you end up, you'll eat well, perhaps langoustines with garlic and dill, saddle of venison with poached pear, Bramley apple and cinnamon crumble. In summer life spills onto the gravelled front, on May Day there's a hog roast for the village fête. Six hand pumps bring in the locals, as do quiz nights, live music and the odd game of rugby on the telly. Bedrooms are excellent. The two courtyard rooms are nice and quiet and come with padded bed heads, pretty art, lovely fabrics and flat-screen TVs; one has a magnificent bathroom. Those in the main house overlook the green. The small room has a four-poster, the big room is perfect for families.
